This is release order with one change: the Kizumonogatari films move up to follow Bakemonogatari. Each row starts at episode 1 of that entry. The counts are episodes or films, not running time: Koyomimonogatari’s episodes are short and the films are feature-length.

Release order is the usual first-watch advice because each entry was made for viewers who had seen the ones before it. Starting in story order would open on a prequel and show you first what Bakemonogatari was built to hint at.

When should I watch Kizumonogatari?

Kizumonogatari is a prequel told in films. It was the second novel, published in 2008, but production delays held the anime back until 2016–17, after every TV entry up to Owarimonogatari had aired.

Our pick is straight after Bakemonogatari: novel publication order, with Bakemonogatari still doing its job as the introduction. For a first watch, any slot after Bakemonogatari and before Owarimonogatari Second Season works; the first three rows below all do. The last row is for a rewatch.

Choose one version. The trilogy runs about three and a half hours across three films; Koyomi Vamp (2024) re-edits them into one 144-minute film. It is the same story, not a sequel. We default to the longer trilogy; pick Koyomi Vamp if that is what your service carries or you want one sitting.

When should I watch Kizumonogatari?
Where to place itWhat it means for you
After Bakemonogatari (our pick)Novel publication order. You meet the cast first, then see the earlier events Bakemonogatari only refers to.
After NisemonogatariWatch it just before Nekomonogatari (Black), so the two prequels run back to back in story order.
After Owarimonogatari (release order)Closest to when they came out: the films opened between January 2016 and January 2017, around Koyomimonogatari. Watch them before Owarimonogatari Second Season.
Before Bakemonogatari (story order)Best kept for a rewatch. It shows up front what Bakemonogatari was written to reveal gradually.

What’s inside Monogatari Series Second Season?

Second Season is one TV run made of five named arcs; use the numbers below to find where each begins. Hanamonogatari was meant to air inside it but was postponed to 2014, so it is a separate entry, not a missing part.

Some listings add three optional recap episodes between arcs. If yours shows 26 episodes, use the right-hand column.

Are Koyomimonogatari, Hanamonogatari and Zoku optional?

Koyomimonogatari: keep it. Its twelve short episodes are spread across the school year the earlier entries cover, and the final ones sit just before Owarimonogatari Second Season in story time, so watch it between the two Owarimonogatari entries.

Hanamonogatari: lower priority, not filler. It is a self-contained five-episode story set later than the entries around it, which is why some viewers postpone it. We keep it in its release slot; skipping it loses a complete story.

Zoku Owarimonogatari: keep it. It follows directly from Owarimonogatari Second Season and leads into Off & Monster Season. It opened in Japanese cinemas in 2018 and aired as six episodes in 2019, so it may be listed as a film or as episodes.

Where does Off & Monster Season fit?

Watch it last. Its 14 episodes streamed weekly from July to October 2024, on ABEMA in Japan, with Crunchyroll streaming them as they were released. It adapts later novels, so it expects you to have finished the route above. Some listings add a short extra numbered 6.5 outside the main 14; watch it where your service places it.

A new Off & Monster Season instalment, Wazamonogatari: Karen Ogre, was revealed in July 2026 for a winter broadcast. No release date had been given as of October 21, 2026, and it is not available yet. It needs a release and order check before it joins this list.

Avoid synopses when checking placement: summaries of later entries can describe how earlier ones end.

Chronological order for a rewatch

For rewatchers: this follows the order of events, keeping each entry whole. That makes it approximate. Second Season, Owarimonogatari and Koyomimonogatari overlap in story time, and an exact timeline would cut them into single episodes. Use the Kizumonogatari version you chose before.

Why do apps show different season numbers?

“Second Season” is a title, not a count: some databases list it as season 3, and Off & Monster Season as season 6. Nekomonogatari (Black), Hanamonogatari, Tsukimonogatari, Koyomimonogatari, Owarimonogatari Second Season and the films are often filed under specials or movies, so check there before assuming one is missing.

Counts vary too. Owarimonogatari’s hour-long premiere is one episode in some listings (12 in total) and two in others (13), and Owarimonogatari Second Season can appear as seven episodes or three long parts. Match by title and length, not season number.

This is viewing-order advice, not a promise that every entry is in one subscription. Availability differs by country; check the title and regional listing in your service first.
