Each row is a complete season, apart from the closing special. The Netflix series released whole seasons at once, so release order keeps the crossover and the returning characters in sequence. The full route is 161 Netflix episodes, then 17 Born Again episodes and a one-off special.

Born Again season 3 is not in the table. Marvel has called it the final season and showed a first look at New York Comic Con in October 2026, but it was not streaming when we reviewed this guide and Marvel had not announced a premiere date. It joins the order when it is released, not when it is announced.

The six Netflix series moved to Disney+ on March 16, 2022, first in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, with other Disney+ regions to follow later. Availability still depends on your country, so check your own service. In the US, Disney+ added profile content-rating controls at the same time; a profile limited to TV-14 will not show these mature-rated series.

Daredevil only: which seasons do I need?

Daredevil only: which seasons do I need?
StepWatchWhy here
1Daredevil seasons 1–2Matt’s story from the start. Frank Castle is introduced in season 2.
2The DefendersMatt’s team-up with Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Danny Rand. Daredevil season 3 follows on from it.
3Daredevil season 3Completes the Netflix run of the series.
4Daredevil: Born Again seasons 1–2Marvel presents the new series as picking up after the original one.

This route keeps one crossover because Daredevil’s own story runs through it. That is 64 episodes, compared with 178 in the full route.

Optional additions: Jessica Jones season 1, Luke Cage season 1 and Iron Fist season 1 before The Defenders give each teammate a proper introduction. The Punisher seasons 1–2 fill in Frank Castle, who returns in Born Again season 1. Jessica Jones season 1 is also useful background for Born Again season 2, where Krysten Ritter returns.

What should I watch before The Defenders?

The complete lead-in is the five seasons released before it: Daredevil 1–2, Jessica Jones 1, Luke Cage 1 and Iron Fist 1. The Defenders runs eight episodes and expects you to know all four leads.

If you need to trim, keep Daredevil seasons 1–2 and Iron Fist season 1. The Defenders is set a few months after Daredevil season 2 and shortly after Iron Fist season 1, and those seasons carry most of the groundwork for the threat the team faces.

Jessica Jones season 1 and Luke Cage season 1 mainly establish those two characters and where their lives stand. Watch them in that order: Luke Cage is first introduced in Jessica Jones season 1. Skipping both means meeting two of the four leads with less background.

Can I skip Iron Fist?

Season 1 is the one that matters here. It introduces Danny Rand, one of The Defenders’ four leads, and together with Daredevil season 2 it lays the groundwork for the team’s central conflict. Skip it and you meet Danny for the first time in The Defenders, with part of that set-up arriving new to you.

Whether you enjoy the series is a separate question, and opinions differ. The practical point is narrower: Iron Fist season 1 is less optional than it looks if The Defenders is on your list, and easier to leave out if it is not.

Season 2 comes after The Defenders and is not needed for Daredevil season 3. Marvel has announced that Finn Jones returns as Danny Rand in Born Again’s final season, so both Iron Fist seasons become more relevant if you plan to continue there once it is released.

Where does The Punisher fit?

Frank Castle is introduced in Daredevil season 2, so watch that first. The Punisher season 1 arrived after The Defenders, but Frank is not part of that crossover; his series follows on from Daredevil season 2. If you are following Frank, you can go straight from Daredevil season 2 to The Punisher.

Season 2 (January 2019) ends the Netflix series. Jon Bernthal returns as Frank in Born Again season 1, and his story continues in The Punisher: One Last Kill, a one-off Disney+ special released on May 12, 2026. Disney+ suggests watching it after Born Again season 2, whose timeframe it overlaps.

Frank also appears in the theatrical film Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026). It is a film outside this TV-series route; check where it is available in your region.

What should I watch before Daredevil: Born Again?

Netflix’s Daredevil seasons 1–3 are the core background. Marvel’s own preview describes Born Again as picking up after the original series, with Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio continuing as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk. Keep The Defenders too, since Daredevil season 3 follows on from it.

Born Again is listed as its own series starting at season 1, not as Daredevil season 4, so search for the full title in your app.

The two titles below are optional. Each brings back Matt or Fisk between the end of the Netflix run and Born Again, and both were promoted with that return. If you add just one, Echo is the more recent and features both characters.

Are the Netflix shows MCU canon?

Fans still argue about this, and we have not found a single formal ruling from Marvel. For planning a watch, the answer changes little: Born Again builds on the Netflix versions of Matt and Fisk either way.

These are the relevant official statements and listings, in date order. This guide does not rule on how much of each Netflix storyline later Marvel titles treat as having happened.

  1. January 2024: Marvel Studios’ Brad Winderbaum said in an interview that he personally was confident Daredevil belongs to the main MCU timeline, and acknowledged the studio had previously avoided a firm answer.
  2. January 2024: Around Echo’s release, Disney+ added all six Netflix series to its MCU timeline-order listing.
  3. February 2025: Marvel’s Born Again preview described the new series as picking up after the original Daredevil series.
