Dragon Ball watch order: Z or Kai, Super, Daima and movies
Core series, Daima and modern film choicesReviewed
Start with Dragon Ball, then choose Z or Kai. Our route continues with Daima, the original Super series, Broly and Super Hero. GT is an optional separate branch after Z.

Coverage & selection notes
A practical viewing route, not a strict scene-by-scene chronology or a complete filmography. Uses the completed 2015–2018 Super series. The 2026 Beerus edition and Galactic Patrol announcement are explained separately, without assuming episode equivalence or regional availability. Older movies, specials, promotional animation and live action are outside the core route.
Dragon Ball watch order for a first viewing
| Step | Watch | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dragon Ball | 153 episodes; start with Goku’s original adventure. |
| 2 | Dragon Ball Z OR Dragon Ball Z Kai | Z: 291 episodes. Kai: 167 in the international version, including The Final Chapters. Choose one. |
| 3 | Dragon Ball Daima | 20 episodes; watch after the Z/Kai story. |
| 4 | Dragon Ball Super (2015–2018) | 131 episodes; the completed original series used by this route. |
| 5 | Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018) | One follow-up film after the Super TV run. |
| 6 | Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (2022) | One film after Broly. |
Finish one row before moving to the next. This is our viewing recommendation: it keeps series intact rather than interrupting Z’s final episodes to insert later productions.
Daima and Super are set before Z’s final episodes. That is why this route is not labelled strict chronological order. Knowing the full Z story first is a useful foundation for both.
Should I watch Dragon Ball Z or Kai?
Kai is a re-edited version of Z, not its sequel. It reduces much of the additional anime material and changes the presentation. Our default for someone who wants a tighter first viewing is Kai; choose Z if you want the longer original television experience.
Do not watch all of Z and then all of Kai expecting a second story. Equally, do not switch between them by matching episode numbers: their edits do not line up that way.
For Kai, include the Buu material commonly labelled The Final Chapters. Toei lists 167 episodes for its international catalogue; editions and service groupings differ. A catalogue ending with the earlier run is not the whole Z story.
Which Dragon Ball movies repeat the TV story?
Our main route keeps all 131 original Super episodes. Its opening stories retell Battle of Gods and Resurrection “F”, so those two films are optional alternate versions when following that route. They have differences; they are not identical edits.
If you already watched both films, Super episode 28 begins the next arc. This is a broad story-continuation option for returning viewers, not a claim that every detail from episodes 1–27 is redundant.
| Film | Where it fits | First-watch advice |
|---|---|---|
| Battle of Gods (2013) | Earlier version of Super’s opening story | Optional if watching Super from episode 1. |
| Resurrection “F” (2015) | Earlier version of Super’s next opening arc | Optional if watching Super from episode 1. |
| Super: Broly (2018) | After the 131-episode Super series | Continue here; do not confuse it with the older Z Broly films. |
| Super Hero (2022) | After Super: Broly | Next modern film in this guide. |
Where do Daima and GT fit?
Daima is a 20-episode adventure connected to the aftermath of the Buu story. We place it after a complete Z/Kai viewing and before Super. If you already finished Super, you can return to Daima without restarting the franchise.
GT has 64 television episodes. Treat it as an optional older sequel branch after Z, rather than a required bridge into Super. Keeping it in its own viewing block avoids pretending every later production joins one seamless timeline.
Older theatrical adventures can be enjoyable extras. This guide deliberately does not assign every film an exact gap between TV episodes when the fit is uncertain. Finish the core route first, then choose the extras you want.
What about Dragon Ball Super: Beerus?
The official site lists an October 2026 launch and describes Beerus as an enhanced edition with a reconstructed narrative. It revisits the beginning of Super; it is not a new story to append after episode 131.
This guide uses the completed 2015–2018 series so that its episode numbers remain unambiguous. We have not mapped the Beerus edition’s episodes against it and do not promise a complete replacement route. Check the edition name before using an episode number from this guide.
The Galactic Patrol is separately announced as a continuation after the original Super anime’s Universe Survival story. It is outside this reviewed route; an announcement is not a completed episode list.
Do I need a filler list as well?
You can start with the route above without researching every episode. Choosing Kai is the main edition decision; choosing one treatment of the opening Super stories prevents unnecessary repetition.
This page does not classify individual Z episodes as filler. An adaptation choice and an episode skip list answer different questions, and mixing them can leave a viewer with mismatched episode numbers.
