Buffy and Angel watch order: combined episode checklist
144 Buffy + 110 Angel episodesReviewed
Watch Buffy seasons 1–3 first. Then combine Buffy 4–7 with Angel 1–4, and finish with Angel season 5. The checklist keeps every TV episode and handles the crossover switches.

Coverage & selection notes
Covers the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003) and Angel (1999–2004): 254 episodes. Within-show episode order is preserved; shared years broadly follow broadcast dates, with Buffy first on shared dates and Buffy 7×17 moved before Angel 4×15 for the crossover setup. A practical editorial order, not an official universal chronology. The 1992 film, unaired pilot, comics and later projects are outside this guide.

Crossover switches to keep in order
These are selected handoffs to watch for inside the full checklist. Keep the intervening episodes; this table alone is not a shortened route. Numbers use season × episode, and avoid revealing the outcomes.
| Connection | Keep this order | Why the switch matters |
|---|---|---|
| Early shared adventure | Buffy 4×03 → Angel 1×03 | The second show continues the first show’s setup. |
| The November visit | Angel 1×07 → Buffy 4×08 → Angel 1×08 | Keep the lead-in and return visit in sequence. |
| The season 4 return | Buffy 4×15–16 → Angel 1×18–19 → Buffy 4×20 | One thread travels between both shows; keep each show’s intervening episodes. |
| Shared history | Buffy 5×07 → Angel 2×07 | Two perspectives on connected backstory. |
| End of the shared second year | Buffy 5×22 → Angel 2×22 | The Angel finale acknowledges a Buffy development. |
| A late crossover setup | Buffy 7×17 → Angel 4×15 → Buffy 7×18 | The checklist moves Buffy 7×17 ahead of its broadcast position. |
| Final season handoff | Angel 4×22 → Buffy 7×21–22 → Angel 5×01 | Finish the Buffy finale before beginning Angel’s final year. |
Which Buffy and Angel seasons go together?
If switching every night interrupts the flow, watch short blocks within each paired year. Check the handoff table before crossing its boundaries, and keep the episode order within each show.
Watching all of Buffy before any Angel is possible, but it changes when you learn about shared events. The combined checklist is our recommendation when seeing both shows for the first time.
| Stage | What to watch |
|---|---|
| Before Angel begins | Buffy seasons 1–3, in season/episode order. |
| First shared year | Buffy season 4 with Angel season 1. |
| Second shared year | Buffy season 5 with Angel season 2. |
| Third shared year | Buffy season 6 with Angel season 3. |
| Fourth shared year | Buffy season 7 with Angel season 4. |
| After Buffy ends | Angel season 5. |
Why not just alternate one episode each?
Broadcast schedules do not always line up. Some weeks have two parts, a break or an earlier finish on one show. Alternating equal episode numbers throughout would miss several handoffs.
The main adjustment in our shared-year sequence is Buffy 7×17 before Angel 4×15. The Buffy episode sets up the visit in Angel, even though its broadcast date falls later. We preserve each show’s own sequence around that move.
Buffy’s first three seasons follow their numbered story order rather than re-creating postponed broadcasts. The guide is meant for watching now, not reconstructing an original television schedule.
The first shared year begins only after Buffy 3×22. Angel season 5 follows Buffy 7×22. These boundaries matter more than small gaps between otherwise unrelated cases.
Do I have to watch both shows?
No. This checklist is for viewers who want both series and their connections. If you only want Buffy, follow its seven seasons in order; use the crossover table to decide whether you want the extra Angel context.
A character crossing over does not make every other episode disposable. Angel develops its own ensemble and ongoing story. Jumping directly to its crossover episodes works better as a return visit than as a first viewing.
