Season 4 recap Spoilers — open after watching
This recap reveals the events of season 4.
Gibbs comes back different, and DiNozzo lives a double life on the director's private errand.
The team runs under DiNozzo for a summer until a case pulls Gibbs out of Mexico - the beard goes, the instincts return by installments, and the year underneath is quieter and stranger: a man reassembling the self he was glad to put down.
The season's long game belongs to Jenny Shepard. Her private war is La Grenouille - an arms dealer she blames in the marrow - and her instrument is DiNozzo, run off-book into an undercover romance with the dealer's daughter, Jeanne Benoit. The show lets it become real: DiNozzo in love inside a lie, lying to his own team about the assignment and to Jeanne about everything, and the year's best material is the cost accruing on a man everyone underestimates.
Around it, the format holds - Sharif's chemical plot, a framed McGee, Ducky's licence questioned - and Ziva's first full American year settles her into the family for good.
It ends with the operation blown: La Grenouille surfacing to ask for protection, Jeanne learning the man she loves is a cover identity, and a body in the water off a marina with the director's fingerprints nowhere and everywhere - the question of what Jenny did left open on purpose.
