Season 2 recap Spoilers — open after watching
This recap reveals the events of season 2.
The team at cruising speed - until the last minutes of the year put a rifle on a rooftop.
The second season runs the format at full confidence: McGee is promoted from
Norfolk to the field team full-time and absorbs DiNozzo's hazing like a scholar;
the cases range from buried Marines to a serial killer who keeps trophies; and
DiNozzo spends an arc dying of pneumonic plague from a letter engineered by a
mother's grief - the show's first proof it can play mortality straight.
Ari Haswari stays mostly offstage, a name in briefings, while the season builds
the terror file around the edges: chatter about an attack, a cell operating
domestically, and Gibbs' unfinished certainty from the year before sitting in
the margins of every threat assessment.
It ends with the show's defining act of violence. The team disrupts the cell's
attack; Ari, burned and vengeful, decides the reply should be personal. On a
rooftop, mid-conversation, mid-smile, a sniper round goes through Kate Todd's
head - the final image of the season, her blood on Gibbs and DiNozzo's faces,
and the series' willingness to kill its own established in a single frame.
