Season 19 recap Spoilers — open after watching
This recap reveals the events of season 19.
The long goodbye: a serial-killer conspiracy, a contract on Gibbs - and a river in Alaska where the story lets him stay.
The premiere resolves the boat as the season means to go on: the explosion was a contract, the contractor a hired killer working for interests the buried serial case threatens, and Gibbs - officially still suspended - works the file from a fishing town's edge with McGee flying out to refuse to leave him alone.
The conspiracy resolves into Sonova Industries and a serial killer bred by corporate cover-up, and the arc's endpoint doubles as the character's: the case closed in Naktok Bay, Gibbs standing in an Alaskan river, telling McGee - with the calm the show spent nineteen years earning - that he is not coming back. The hug on the shoreline is the franchise's true series finale for its central figure, played without a death and better for it.
The remainder of the season builds what follows: Alden Parker, the FBI agent fired for helping the team, hired to lead it - a courteous, coffee-averse contrast running on consensus where Gibbs ran on rule; Knight arriving as the new junior energy; and the back half letting the team be an ensemble again - Vance's field turn, Palmer's slow healing, Torres' self-destruction arc - under a leader still auditioning for their trust, and earning it by the finale.
