Season 18 recap Spoilers — open after watching
This recap reveals the events of season 18.
The pandemic-shaped year: a sting told backwards, Bishop's exit on a false confession, and Gibbs suspended with a boat and a purpose.
The season runs displaced in time - opening inside the previous spring with Gibbs and Fornell's opioid sting - and then plays its shortened year as a series of reckonings. Jack Sloane closes her file in Afghanistan with a goodbye that says what she and Gibbs never quite did. McGee, Torres and Kasie carry the casework through a masked and rearranged world.
The season's fault line is Gibbs himself. A case involving animal cruelty breaks his patience on camera - a beating he declines to apologise for - and the suspension that follows is written as diagnosis, not plot: a man whose code has been load-bearing for thirty years discovering what it costs the people downstream. He works the year's buried thread - a serial killer the agency declines to acknowledge - from outside the wire, with a journalist as his only ally.
It ends twice. Bishop walks out on a planted confession - an old leak claimed as her own - into deep-cover work, her almost with Torres left as exactly that. And Gibbs' boat, finished at last, sails one episode too early: the season's last shot is its hull exploding on the river, and Gibbs surfacing in the debris, breathing, saying nothing.
