Season 23 recap Spoilers — open after watching
This recap reveals the events of season 23.
The Marino pursuit, the director's chair emptied for good, and a gunshot in an alley the year refuses to resolve.
The season opens with Parker hunting Carla Marino past the edge of what the building will sanction - Vance objecting, the team covering - and the pursuit threads the year without offering the clean arrest the grief wants.
The heavier loss is internal: the season takes Leon Vance himself, and the show hands the aftermath to his daughter. Kayla Vance, on a video call with her father when a coffee-shop bombing went off a year earlier, builds a privately funded team to hunt the radicalisation network behind it - a forum called Archive where angry young men find each other - precisely so NCIS cannot shut her down. The investigation runs anyway into Gabriel LaRoche, now at Justice and closing doors, and into the discovery that some of her own funding is dirty money.
The finale braids the threads into a cliffhanger built on family: McGee's teenage son Mateo, seemingly done with NCIS after a tour, secretly files an application - and when Torres confronts him in an alley, the boy is armed, warns they are being watched, and a shot is fired from somewhere before the screen cuts. Who fired, and who fell, the season declines to say.
