Season 5 recap Spoilers — open after watching
This recap reveals the events of season 5.
Luke and Lorelai, finally - and a yacht, a dropped semester, and the worst fight the two Gilmores ever have.
The porch kiss becomes an actual relationship, conducted under town referendum and
Emily's open sabotage; a disastrous dinner and a staged intervention nearly end it before
Luke's 'I'm all in' settles the question for the season. Dean's marriage finishes the way
it was always going to, and his rebound with Rory dies quietly of the difference between
who they were and who she is becoming.
The year's true machinery is the Huntzbergers. Rory falls into Logan's orbit - the Life
and Death Brigade, no-strings that becomes strings - and then into his family's contempt:
a dinner where she is measured for wife material and found decorative. Worse is Mitchum's
verdict after her internship: she doesn't have it. Rory, who has never failed at anything,
answers by stealing a yacht with Logan, taking a mug shot, and dropping out of Yale.
The fight that follows is the series' deepest cut: Lorelai, overruled, watches her
parents side with Rory - poolhouse, DAR luncheons, community service - and the two
Gilmores stop speaking, an estrangement the show plays with no comic net.
It ends with Emily and Richard beaming at a rudderless Rory, and Lorelai, out of moves,
asking Luke to marry her.
