Season 3 recap Spoilers — open after watching
This recap reveals the events of season 3.
The triangle resolves, Harvard loses to Yale, and the Dragonfly stops being a daydream.
Rory comes home from Washington to find the kiss unresolved and spends the fall letting
Dean absorb what she cannot say. He ends it himself, publicly, at a dance marathon - the
season's best set piece - naming what everyone could see. Rory and Jess together turns
out to be harder than Rory and Jess almost: he works, broods, stops going to school, and
eventually leaves for California without saying goodbye, a departure Rory hears about
secondhand.
The college decision is the year's quiet earthquake. Harvard has been the plan since
childhood - Lorelai's plan as much as Rory's - and Yale wins on the merits, with the
complication that it is Richard's school and twenty minutes away. The application-fee
loan, the pro-con lists, and Emily's poorly concealed delight all get their scenes.
Lorelai and Sookie, meanwhile, stop postponing: the Independence Inn's fire damage and an
available property turn the Dragonfly from running joke into signed purchase. Money is
newly real - a graduation-day loan from Luke says more about that relationship than
either of them will.
It ends with Rory as valedictorian, a graduation speech that undoes the whole room, and
Europe with her mother before Yale.
