Season 4 recap Spoilers — open after watching

This recap reveals the events of season 4.

A year of interns, a killer inside the Jeffersonian's walls, and a coma dream that tells the truth sideways.

Zack's chair is filled by rotation - Clark, Wendell, Daisy, Fisher, Mr. Nigel-Murray - and the revolving interns become the show's chorus, each a different argument about what science is for. The team works London, the circus, and the season's long paranoia: Gormogon's file was not the last secret the lab was keeping.

Booth's brother Jared arrives to spend the family's credit; Sweets, the boy psychologist, becomes furniture the show cannot do without; and the Gravedigger resurfaces to take Booth himself - buried in a decommissioned ship, escaping on grit while the team commits several felonies to find him. The kidnapper finally gets a face: a federal prosecutor, arrested at last by the people she buried.

The engine underneath is Booth and Brennan closing the gap neither will name. Brennan asks him - clinically, sincerely - to father her child; the request detonates gently over several episodes; and then the year ends inside Booth's head: a brain tumour, surgery, and a four-day coma dreamed as a full alternate life where the two of them are married nightclub owners. He wakes with the dream still real to him, asking who she is - and the season leaves the recovery, and what he remembers of loving her, deliberately unsettled.
