Season 12 recap Spoilers — open after watching
This recap reveals the events of season 12.
The last season pays every debt: a hostage in a workshop, a serial bomber with a surname, and a lab that ends in rubble and starts again.
The Puppeteer case resolves in the premiere - Brennan recovered, the killer's strings cut - and the final year gets to its real business: closing accounts. Zack Addy's file is reopened and the show, twelve years late and unashamed, un-writes its cruellest twist as far as honesty allows: he was an accessory to the logic, never the hand, and the season works his exoneration like a case.
Max Keenan gets the exit he was always owed - dying in the act of protecting his grandchildren, the criminal record redeemed the only way he would have accepted. And the last antagonist arrives with a grudge older than the team: Mark Kovac, son of a war criminal Booth's rifle retired, hunting the family methodically.
His endgame levels the building. A bomb in the lab detonates with the team inside; Brennan surfaces in the wreckage with the season's most frightening injury - the pattern-reading gift gone, the one self she has never doubted, offline. The finale runs the pursuit anyway: her team compensating, Booth's aim, Kovac's fuel truck, and the gift returning under pressure exactly as she learns it was never the whole of her.
It ends in the ruined lab with the team rebuilding shelf by shelf - the argument of twelve seasons stated one last time: the bones are the work, but the family was the point.
