This recap reveals the events of season 1.

A forensic anthropologist who reads bones, an FBI agent who reads people, and neither will admit the arrangement works.

Dr. Temperance Brennan identifies the dead from what is left when everything soft is gone - the best in her field, socially literal, and a novelist on the side. Seeley Booth is the FBI agent who needs her lab when a body is past recognition, and the series's premise is their argument: evidence against instinct, conducted over corpses and takeout.

The Jeffersonian team assembles around them - Angela, who gives victims their faces back; Hodgins, bugs and slime and conspiracy theories; Zack, Brennan's prodigy assistant - and the cases run the format's range: a senator's intern in a pond, remains in a refrigerator, a girl in a chimney.

Underneath, the season plants Brennan's own file: her parents vanished when she was fifteen, the foster years that followed, and a brother, Russ, who let her go into the system alone. The year's spine is that cold case warming - her mother's remains identified in the lab's own storage, a bank box under an alias, and the realisation that her parents were not who they said they were.

It ends with a name off a recording - her father's voice, warning her off - and Brennan choosing, for once, not to know everything yet.
