Season 2 recap Spoilers — open after watching
This recap reveals the events of season 2.
The name is finally said out loud, and it is worse than anyone guessed.
Cooper survives the shooting and the investigation resumes with the tools the town has come to expect - visions, giants, a message from space - and with the evidence tightening around the Palmer house itself. The answer, when it comes, is the series' darkest hour: Laura's killer is revealed mid-season, at home, to the sound of a record skipping, and what follows is a possession story told with total conviction. The thing that killed her is called BOB, it wears people, and the man it wore is made to see what he did before he is allowed to die.
With the mystery closed, the season scatters for a stretch - a civil case, a beauty contest, James on the road - and then finds its second spine: Windom Earle, Cooper's former partner, brilliant and insane, playing chess where every taken piece is a body. His game is not really with Cooper; it is with the place Cooper has been circling all along. The Black Lodge - the red room of the dream - is real, it has a door in the woods, and it opens under certain conditions that Earle intends to force.
It ends inside. Annie is taken, Cooper follows, and the Lodge does to him what it does to the unprepared. The last scene in the bathroom - a cracked mirror, a voice asking about Annie - is the cruellest ending American television had attempted to that point.
