Season 8 recap Spoilers — open after watching
This recap reveals the events of season 8.
A siren, the devil himself, and a bell that can burn a town - the series argues its way to a close.
The thing in the vault is Sybil, a siren who eats minds for a master the show finally names: Cade, the devil of its cosmology, collecting souls through fire. Damon and Enzo open the season enslaved to her, harvesting the wicked - and the year's first movement is prying Damon's buried self back out from under her control, memory by memory.
The mythology converges on Mystic Falls one last time: a founders' bell that can crack hell open, a maxwell heirloom, and Matt Donovan - the show's one durable human - as the only hand that can ring it. Stefan, human at last after burning through a year of bargains, marries Caroline in a wedding staged partly as bait.
Katherine, because it was always going to be Katherine, is running hell by the end, and her plan is simple spite: burn the town with everyone in it. The finale splits the difference the series has argued for eight years - which brother owes the world a death - and answers it in a hallway of fire: Stefan gives Damon the cure, keeps the hellfire appointment himself, and tells Elena, waiting on the other side of the veil of sleep, that he heard her at last.
Bonnie breaks the sleeping spell rather than outlive it. Elena wakes to a finished story: a long human life with Damon, and, at its end, two doors and two porches - peace, in the show's word, for everyone who was owed it.
