This recap reveals the events of season 2.
Katherine walks in wearing Elena's face, and behind her comes something much older.
Katherine's return is the fox in the henhouse - she compels, manipulates, kills Caroline in a hospital bed as a message, and turns the love triangle into a hall of mirrors. Caroline waking as a vampire is the season's quiet triumph: the shallowest girl in town becomes its most disciplined new predator, coached by Stefan.
The mythology deepens fast. Werewolves are real - the Lockwood men carry the curse - and a werewolf bite is lethal to vampires, which prices every full moon. Elena learns she is not just Katherine's double but a doppelganger, a supernatural recurrence whose blood is the key to breaking an ancient curse. The curse belongs to Klaus, an Original - the first family of vampires - who needs a doppelganger's sacrifice to unbind his hybrid nature.
Elijah, Klaus's brother, arrives first: courtly, terrifying, and open to a deal. The back half of the season is the town assembling weapons - a witch at full power, a dagger that stills Originals - against a creature none of it will stop.
The sacrifice happens. Jenna is turned and killed for it, Elena's birth father trades his life for hers, and Damon takes a werewolf bite saving her. The finale spends Stefan's freedom buying the cure: he leaves town as Klaus's ripper on a blood-soaked apprenticeship, and Elena kisses Damon goodbye a moment before it turns out he will live.
