Season 7 recap Spoilers — open after watching
This recap reveals the events of season 7.
After Red John: the FBI years, one last adversary, and the couch finally left empty.
The final season is the show without its engine, on purpose. Jane and Lisbon stop pretending - the airport tarmac confession at the end of the previous stretch becomes an actual relationship, conducted shyly and against both their instincts, and the season's real subject is whether Patrick Jane can want a future without dishonouring his past.
The casework carries on under Abbott, with Vega's rookie earnestness giving the team its new pulse - until the show, which has always priced things honestly, makes the point once more: she dies on the job, and Jane responds the way loss has always moved him, by trying to leave.
The last adversary is Lazarus - a serial killer without mystique, which is the point. No network, no poetry, no decade of theatre: just a large, methodical man who takes Lisbon's existence as provocation. The endgame plays out in the dark of his property with Jane, unarmed as ever, using the only weapons he has ever had - patience, misdirection, and a shovel-edge of real fear, because now he has something to lose again.
It ends with a wedding by the lake at Jane's cabins, the team assembled, Lisbon pregnant - a piece of news delivered privately, the way the show liked its feelings - and the smiling face nowhere on any wall.
