This recap reveals the events of season 10.
Fourteen years later the story comes back, and its own explanation is the first thing it overturns.
They are both out. Scully is practising medicine; Mulder is in a house with the blinds down. What brings them back is a broadcaster with a conspiracy theory and a woman who says she was taken repeatedly, and the theory the season builds from her is a straight repudiation of the last one: no colonists, no bargain, no timetable. Men took the technology from a crash decades ago and have been using it on their own population ever since, and the alien invasion was the cover story rather than the plot.
Mulder accepts this quickly and Scully does not, and the argument between them is the best thing in the six hours.
Between the two halves the show goes back to what it always did well — a research facility hiding children who should not exist, a monster who turns out to be more reasonable than the people investigating him, a grief that has nothing supernatural in it until it does.
The end is an epidemic. Immune systems collapse across the country in days, and the cause is in everyone already, put there by something as ordinary as routine vaccination. Scully works out that her own altered DNA is the basis for a cure. She is standing on a bridge with the cure in her hand and her partner dying in a car when the sky opens above them.
