Major Crimes season 6: summary & episode guide
13 episodes · 13 kept in The Essentials
Thirteen episodes, three cases, each told in four or five parts. This is the last season, and the finale was made knowing it. Watch all of it, in order: every case runs straight through, and the personal stories carry from one case to the next. The recap below stays folded, so you can open it only once you have seen what it covers.
Titles and episode images are visible below. A watch path hides future details by default. An episode left out of a path is not necessarily filler.
Season 6 summary & turning points Full-season spoilers — open after watching
Season 6 starts with a new chain of command. Leo Mason is the assistant chief, Wes Nolan is a permanent member of the squad, and Camila Paige arrives as a recruit Provenza already knows. Julio is away on bereavement leave, so Buzz spends more time in the field. The first case takes five episodes. Three 15-year-olds slip away from a Catholic school’s museum trip. One of them, a diabetic without his insulin, turns up dead; the other two surface alive in Mexico and are brought back to Los Angeles. The case closes with a doctor in custody and one of the surviving boys charged with manslaughter over the death of his violent stepfather. [2][1][3]
Two personal stories run underneath. News about Phillip Stroh in the premiere puts Rusty on edge, and he would rather protect himself than lean on the police, so he asks to carry a gun. Sharon agrees, trains him to use it and warns him what taking a life costs. Then Sharon collapses and is diagnosed with a heart condition. The wedding is briefly in doubt, but she stays on the case, and in episode 5 she marries Andy with her family and the squad there. [1][4]
The second case opens with a well-known attorney shot dead in her car and widens into a pattern of sexual assaults on servers at Tackles, a restaurant chain. A former waitress connected to the case is found suffocated. Sharon has a setback, and Rusty and Gus are struggling. In episode 9 Sharon collapses in the middle of an interrogation and dies in hospital. Provenza is put in temporary charge. As word of her collapse spreads, a scene at the restaurant where Gus works shows that Stroh is back in Los Angeles. [1][3][2]
The last four episodes are a manhunt. DDA Emma Rios warns the squad that Stroh is probably back, and she is soon found drowned in her own pool. He has help: Dylan Baxter, a young British hacker who has been listening in on Major Crimes, so Stroh stays a step ahead. Stroh’s birth mother tells the squad what he did at 16, the first time he raped and killed, and that leads them to the victims he started with. In episode 12 Buzz finds the hack, the squad sets a trap for Baxter, and Rusty works out what Stroh is really after: money. Another murder ends with a warning that Rusty is next. [1][3][5]
Key connections to revisit
These checkpoints explain the recap; they are not a complete watch path.
Three boys missing
The search starts, one of the boys is found dead, and Julio’s leave pushes Buzz into the field. News about Stroh reaches the squad, and Rusty decides he would rather protect himself. He asks Sharon to let him carry a gun. [1][3][4]
Sharon’s heart
Sharon collapses and is diagnosed with a heart condition. For a moment the wedding is in doubt, but she and Andy decide to go ahead, and she won’t step back from the case. With her in hospital, Provenza takes charge of it as the two surviving boys are brought back from Mexico. [1][3]
The wedding
The first case closes with a doctor arrested and one boy charged over his stepfather’s death. Then Sharon and Andy marry, with her family and the squad there. [1]
A lawyer’s murder
A well-known attorney is shot dead in her car, and the suspects include a film director and a former football star. A second death points to Tackles. Sharon has a health setback, and Rusty and Gus hit a wall. [1][3]
The double bill
The case becomes a pattern of assaults on Tackles servers, and a twist knocks the squad off balance. Then Sharon collapses during an interrogation and dies in hospital. As the news breaks, Stroh turns up at the restaurant where Gus works, back in town. These two aired on the same night; watch them that way. [1][2]
Stroh’s move
The squad is still grieving when Rios warns them Stroh is back, and she is murdered before the episode is out. Baxter’s spying keeps Stroh ahead, and his mother gives up the secret of his first killing, at 16. [1][3]
The hack
Buzz works out that someone has hacked into the squad’s systems, and they set a trap for Baxter. Rusty connects the new victims and sees what Stroh wants. Another murder follows, with a warning that Rusty is next. [1][3][5]
The finale
A countdown, a decoy and a boat. The ending section below has the rest. [5][1]
Season 6 ending explained Finale spoilers — open after watching
Police storm Baxter’s house and kill him, and the countdown on his screen turns out to be a dead man’s switch, not a bomb. A travel file sends most of the force to an airstrip, where Stroh never shows. Rusty has been uneasy all day about the “Ms. Bechtel?” on Stroh’s list, and a photo in the Bechtel home shows Provenza what it means: a boat moored in the marina. He leaves Rusty and Gus behind and goes aboard alone. Stroh drops his knife and raises his hands. When he bends for the handcuffs, he reaches for a gun on his ankle, and Rusty, from the stairwell, shoots him five times. Provenza puts the shooting down as his own, in self-defence, so that none of it lands on Rusty. [5][1]
Then the squad changes shape. Provenza gets permanent command of Major Crimes. Julio takes a promotion to lieutenant and a job in Criminal Intelligence, and Andy moves into his desk. Buzz is sent to the police academy to come back as a probationary detective. Rusty agrees to spend five years as a prosecutor in the DA’s office once he passes the bar. Fritz brings word that Brenda is worried about Rusty, which is as close as she gets to appearing. The series ends on Provenza telling the squad he could keep doing this job forever. [5][2][1]

Viewing questions
Is season 6 the last season of Major Crimes?
Yes. TNT announced it on October 3, 2017, four weeks before the premiere. The season had been ordered as a normal renewal, but that week James Duff was directing the last episode, and he shot it knowing it would end the series. There is no season 7.
Why did Major Crimes end?
TNT cancelled it and gave no public reason. It was still the network’s most-watched drama; TVLine pointed out that its audience was older than those of Claws and The Librarians, though no older than Animal Kingdom’s, which TNT had renewed. James Duff said ending it was not his idea and called it a business decision, not a personal one. Mary McDonnell said it came as no surprise.
Do I need season 5, or The Closer, before season 6?
Season 5, yes. Season 6 follows on from the season 5 finale and leans on five seasons of history between Sharon, Rusty and the squad. The Closer is optional: Major Crimes was built to stand on its own, and season 6 makes sense without it.
How many episodes are in season 6?
13, aired on TNT from October 31, 2017 to January 9, 2018. They make up three cases: episodes 1–5, 6–9 and 10–13. Two December nights were double bills: episodes 8 and 9 on the 19th, the first of them the show’s 100th episode, and 10 and 11 on the 26th.
Where does season 6 leave Sharon and Andy?Season spoilers — open after watching
Andy ends the season a widower. They marry in episode 5, after her diagnosis, and in episode 9 she collapses during an interrogation and dies in hospital, with four episodes of the series left. Andy stays with the squad to the end. James Duff told TVLine that a medical retirement would have left her a way back and no real goodbye, that killing her in the finale would have ended the series too darkly, and that he would not keep Mary McDonnell tied to a show he knew was ending. She agreed to it, and he called her death a metaphor for the show’s own.
How does the last case end?Season spoilers — open after watching
With Stroh dead, in the finale. Provenza corners him on a boat; Stroh fakes a surrender and reaches for an ankle gun, and Rusty shoots him from the stairwell. Provenza says he fired, to protect Rusty. Before that, Stroh kills DDA Emma Rios and uses a young hacker to stay ahead of the squad. Fittingly, it is Rusty who ends it: he has been the witness against Stroh since The Closer’s last episode.
Where does the finale leave Rusty and the squad?Season spoilers — open after watching
Provenza runs Major Crimes for good. Julio leaves as a lieutenant for Criminal Intelligence, Buzz heads to the academy to return as a probationary detective, and Andy stays. Rusty will become a prosecutor in the DA’s office after the bar, and has agreed to five years there.
